A Brief Overview of Breast Augmentation

By Alan King

When a woman receives breast augmentation, she is using an implant to increase the size or look of her bosom. There are many different reasons that a woman may decide to accept the procedure, including correcting physical deformities, repairing cancer-ridden breasts, and enhancing physical appearance. The practice is so widely accepted that it is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries in the United States with more than 300,000 performed on a yearly basis.

How Breast Augmentation Works

To receive the material that will increase the size and shape of your breasts, an incision will be made around this part of the body. The cut into the skin is often performed below the breasts so that scars will be hidden. Depending on the type of skill your surgeon possesses, there could be no physical evidence that a surgery even took place. Once the incision is opened to a reasonable size, implants are inserted close to the muscles located in the chest. When the surgery is complete, sutures close the incision. When choosing alternative insertion locations, the procedure will differ, as well as the visibility of scars.

Breast Implant Materials

There are numerous decisions associated with the process of breast augmentation, including selecting the shape and size of breast implants that will best complement your body and personal preferences. The materials that they are made from also make a difference in both appearance and cost. There are two main types of implants a plastic surgeon will most likely discuss with you. The first is a saline filled option that is filled with a sterile liquid. The second and most controversial throughout the years is made from silicone: a silicone shell that is filled with a gummy silicone gel.

Types of Incisions

Depending on your muscle build, type of implant, and personal preferences, a number of incision selections are available to choose from. Some incision approaches may cut into various parts of the body, such as underneath the breast or the armpit. This also means that some patients may encounter minimal to prominent scarring, as well as virtually no signs of surgery. Sometimes an endoscope is used to help the surgeon properly place implants through an incision.

The most common incision choice is called inframammary, which is located below the breast. It is here that the placement of an implant is easiest. Since silicone gel implants require a lengthier incision, this is the option many women tend to choose. When an implant is inserted through the areolar border, the incision approach is called periareolar. Larger silicone gel implant patients rarely choose this method. When a patient wishes no visible breast scars, they may choose transaxillary (armpit) or transumbilical (naval) incisions.

Implant Placement

After the incision is made, the insertion and placement of the implant follows. The major muscle involved in this step of breast augmentation is called the pectoralis. When the implant is placed between the breast tissue and the pectoralis muscle, it is called subglandular. A subfascial placement is positioned underneath the fascia of the pectoralis muscle. When inferior muscular attachments are released, a subpectoral implant is placed underneath the pectoralis major muscle, while submuscular placement involves insertion without the release of the inferior muscles, which mainly accommodates breast reconstruction patients.

Factors Affecting Breast Augmentation Recovery

By Tara Pingle

Generally speaking, most patients have a similar recovery experience after breast augmentation surgery. At first, patients are stiff and sore and experience swelling, minor bruising, redness and discomfort surrounding the incision locations. Patients need to wear a special support bra, limit their movements and get a lot of rest during the first 24 hours to aid in the recovery.

During the first day or two, it is recommended that patients have a friend or loved one assist them with making meals, preparing ice packs and taking their pain medications at the appropriate times. Most patients are usually back to normal activities within the first few days and then back to work within a week of the surgery as long as their jobs do not require strenuous physical activity.

Scars from the breast augmentation surgery will usually begin to fade in about four to six weeks, and the breast shape should settle into its permanent positioning during that time. Most patients are entirely healed and enjoying the final results of their surgery between six months and a year from the time of the procedure.

Although most patients have similar recoveries overall, there are some factors that can influence the ease and length of recovery. The most important factors to consider are your age, medical history, skin characteristics and the surgical methods used by your cosmetic surgeon, including the implant type and implant placement.

Age and Pre-existing Medical Conditions

The younger you are, the easier and faster your recovery time will likely be. This is because your body is more resilient and able to heal at a quicker pace. Healing time can also be affected by other health conditions you may have or medications you must take on a daily basis. You should discuss your medical history and medications thoroughly with your cosmetic surgeon to find out if you will need special post-op care due to these factors.

Skin Type and Characteristics

Your skin type and characteristics can also impact your recovery time and the extent of scarring and bruising you experience. If you tend to bruise and scar easily, you should expect to see more bruising, scarring and a longer overall recovery than the average breast augmentation patient. Make sure to discuss this with your cosmetic surgeon so he or she can plan your follow-up appointments accordingly and ensure that you know the proper exercises for keeping scar tissue and additional post-op complications to a minimum.

Procedure and Implant Type

The exact procedure type and breast implant you select can affect your recovery time. For example, if you have selected an adjustable implant, healing time and scarring is usually decreased. This is because adjustable implants are not fully filled at the time of the initial procedure, keeping tension and pressure on the incisions and surrounding tissue to a minimum. This expedites the recovery process by reducing overall swelling and helping the incisions heal as quickly as possible.

If you choose to have your implants placed under the muscle as opposed to over the muscle, healing time will take longer. This is because there are more incisions needed to insert implants under the muscle, which causes additional swelling and bruising.

If you have additional questions or concerns about the breast augmentation recovery process, you should discuss them candidly with your cosmetic surgeon before the procedure takes place.

Is former Indianapolis Colts cheerleader

Lisa Perry Picture Lisa Perry good enough for Playboy? With all these professional cheerleaders engaging in lascivious acts, the ray of purity in all this controversy remains one Lisa Perry, a former Indianapolis Colts cheerleader who now serves as a sports commentator for Gambling911.com. But don't get us wrong, Lisa Perry can certainly pose for Playboy....if she so desired.
Her "Cheerleader" contract (obtained by Gambling911) forbid Lisa from taking photographs in magazines such as Playboy. But Ms. Perry was dismissed by the Colts organization for reasons that were without merit in the eyes of Gambling911. It should not surprise anybody if Ms. Perry no longer felt loyalty to the Colts Cheerleader organization and one day decided to pose for Playboy Magazine - maybe sooner than later.
Lisa Perry belongs in Playboy.
